Cleansing, serum, moisturising and sun protection; routines by age and common mistakes.
The biggest misconception in skin care is that the number of products determines the result. In fact a skin's needs vary with age, skin type and lifestyle, and a proper routine rests on four basic steps. Here is a practical plan arranged by age.
The four basic steps
- Cleansing: A pH-balanced cleanser suited to your skin type morning and evening. If you wear makeup in the evening, double cleanse (oil-based + foam).
- Treatment / serum: Vitamin C or niacinamide in the morning; retinol (only if not pregnant) or hyaluronic acid in the evening.
- Moisturising: Gel for oily skin, cream texture for dry skin.
- Sun protection: SPF 30-50 every morning, even when it is cloudy. UV is the biggest cause of ageing and spots.
Your 20s: prevention
Acne and oiliness are in the foreground. A salicylic acid cleanser, light gel moisturiser and SPF are enough. Exfoliate lightly once or twice a week. Starting daily sun protection at this age is the biggest saving in the future.
Your 30s: protection
First fine lines, dullness and spots begin. Add retinol in the evening, vitamin C in the morning and an eye cream. A professional treatment (medical skin care) once a month renews the skin.
40s and beyond: renewal
Collagen loss accelerates; skin dries and sagging begins. Peptide serums, richer moisturisers and regular superficial peels are needed. Radiofrequency-assisted treatments provide firming.
Common mistakes
- Using many actives at once (retinol + acid + vitamin C); it damages the skin barrier.
- Squeezing spots; it leaves marks and infection.
- Applying sunscreen only in summer.
- Skipping moisturiser on oily skin; the skin then produces more oil.
When to see a professional?
A home routine maintains skin while professional care transforms it. For pore cleansing, superficial peels and active delivery, a specialist treatment every 4-6 weeks is enough. See a dermatologist for persistent acne, rosacea signs or suspicious mole changes.

Routine through the seasons
In winter switch your moisturiser to a richer texture and return to gel texture in summer. Because air conditioning and heating dry the skin, a room humidifier and plenty of water help. Skin may become sensitive at season changes; try one new product at a time.
