How laser works, number of sessions, when to start, preparation and aftercare.
Laser hair removal leads to disappointment if it is understood as "do it once and be rid of hair"; started with realistic expectations, it is one of the most satisfying beauty investments. In this article we answer the most common questions about number of sessions, timing and preparation.
How does laser work?
Laser light is drawn to the melanin pigment in the hair root and the resulting heat weakens the root cells. Hair responds only in the active (anagen) phase of its growth cycle; only about a third of body hair is in this phase at the same time. That is why one session is not enough; sessions are repeated until hairs are caught in different phases.
How many sessions are needed?
It varies with the area: on average 6-8 for underarms and bikini, 6-8 for legs and arms and 6-8 for the face. Dark, thick hair and fair skin respond fastest. Fine, light-coloured hair and hormonal problems (PCOS, thyroid) can increase the number of sessions. The session calculator on our site gives you an estimated number; the exact plan is made after a test shot.
When to start?
Autumn and winter, before the sunny months, are the best time for laser because there is a lower burn risk when the skin is not tanned. For summer preparation, start by January-February at the latest. Sun exposure, tanning beds and self-tan should be stopped at least four weeks before a session.
Preparation
- Shave the area 2-3 days before the session; do not use waxing, tweezers, epilators or depilatory cream.
- Do not apply perfume, deodorant or lotion to the area.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, treatment cannot be done; tell us.
- If you use photosensitising medication (some antibiotics, isotretinoin), consult a physician.
After the session
Mild redness and a local warm feeling are normal and pass within a few hours. Avoid hot showers, sauna, pool and intense exercise for 48 hours. Apply SPF 50 every day. Hairs shed within 7-14 days; this "shedding" is a sign the laser is working, so do not pull the hairs.
Does it hurt?
Thanks to the cooling head, most people describe a mild warmth or a rubber-band-snap feeling. In sensitive areas a topical cream can be used before the session.
Is it permanent?
Laser permanently reduces the number of hairs, but hormonal changes may produce new hair years later. One maintenance session a year prevents this.

Laser for men
Back, chest, shoulders and neck are the most requested areas for men. Because male hair is thicker and denser the response is good but sessions are longer; in the beard area, hormonal influence may mean 8-10 sessions.
